(House Party to Close out the Year)

“I was cleaning out my photos folder, and I found something very nostalgic~ Look~ It’s Nacchan in bunbun ears from the eve of the eve last year!”

“Why’d ya take a picture o’ that! Ugh~!!”

“Oh, you have festivities like that too? Was it a costume party?”

“No, um… A lot things were goin’ on… But basically it was Shitara-san’s little joke.”

“Oh, I see now~”

“Man~ Nacchan knew nothing about Kunieda-san’s true colors back then~ When you think about it, it’s really quite touching, isn’t it?”

“Hmm, so it had been about 3 weeks before the race? You must find it very touching too, Kunieda-san.”

“It’s not touching, it’s triggering. Don’t make me remember the worst thing that happened to me at the start of the year!”

“Oh, I-I’m so sorry.”

“And Nacchan just apologizes for some reason~”

“What the hell was with those bunny ears? Those stupid things kept bouncing around. Remembering it pisses me off. Like it was just yesterday.”

“Nggh…”

“Hey, don’t bring it back up. He probably couldn’t protest if Shitara-san had insisted on it.”

“No way, he was damn into it!”

“It’s a misunderstandin’!”

“I mean, look! He’s acting all funny, right? He’s like a small animal, yeah? It was like ‘Oh, I’m so embarrassed, but if there’s no other choice~’ But it was all just an act to show off. Like ‘Look, look, it’s bunny ears~ Don’t they look perfect on me? Don’t they look cute?’ Ugh.”

“It’s really a misunderstandin’!”

“And what’s with the ‘it’s Shitara-san’s fault’? Oh, I know. You’re taking the route where you blame your big sister for sending in your resume without telling you? Is this the Junon Super Boy Contest? For the sake of argument, let’s just say we’re being serious here, you just don’t go to the audition. But what? Is this a stupid story you can tell people about how you produced a demand beyond your expectations? Though you applied all on your own, right? To the Super Boy Contest or the Heisei Riders.”

“What? Um… I dun have a big sister…?”

“Those insults from that wild imagination of yours sure are something.”

“Hmm, but Kunieda-san, since you’re rhapsodizing so passionately about it, it must mean that you think Nacchan is cute too~”

“What?”

“Ahh, I totally understand~ He’s really too cute~”

“With your head that boiling, your brain cells will be dead by the end of the year.”

“I’m beggin’ ya, dun talk anymore.”

“You think so too, right, Tsuzuki-san?”

“Hmm? Mmm, not really.”

“There you go again~ Well, I guess you have to answer like that in front of Kunieda-san~ Just to make things easier for yourself~”

“Okay, I’m going to kill you now before the year’s over. Kitarou, hand over your wooden sandals. I’ll beat him to death with them.”

“I-I’m not wearin’ any.”

“It has nothing to do with who’s in front of me. I just think that Nacchan’s very cool.”

“Huh? …Oh geez, no way, oh geez, no way, oh geez…”

“Why the hell are you blushing!?”

“Waah~! It’s a monster! It’s a monster who flirts with everything! Run for your life~!”

“I don’t want to hear that from you.”

“Ahh, that scared me… That person’s dangerous, but in a very different sense from ya, Minagawa.”

“Well, he did capture the legendary river monster like it was nothing~ But still, you blushed way too hard, you know!!”

“What? But I couldna help it…”

“For your information, Tsuzuki-san has told me that I’m very cool too, okay?”

“Whatta ya gettin’ competitive over?”

“Anyway, I’ll get more of the details from you at Donki.”

“Whatta ya gonna buy? …I just feel like it was the first time in my life that someone called me cool. Even though ya prolly hear it all the time.”

“What? I’ve never called you cool before?”

“Hmm~ …Even if ya did, the weight of ya words are totally different.”

“Did I hear that right? Fine, I’ll add weight by not speaking anymore!”

“Huh?”

“ ………………I give up! If I don’t talk, I can’t breathe!”

“Seriously?”

“Don’t sulk, Kei.”

“I’m not.”

“You’re obviously the coolest out of everyone.”

“Shut up.”

“You’re so kool~”

“…There was something different about that.”

“Hmm, I feel like it’s not special enough for Kunieda-san. Maybe you’re so khoolio?1

“That’s so freaking lame, dammit!!”

(New Year’s Eve)

“Hey, you’re here late. You still working?”

“I don’t understand the meaning of ‘still’ in that sentence.”

“It’s the end of the year.”

“Anyone who wants their weekends and holidays shouldn’t work at a TV network to begin with.”

“You just work too much. Have you ever closed shop for a day? You can edit from home, you know.”

“I wanted to play with the new editing workstation, get myself familiar with it while it’s free. It’s too bulky to buy one to keep at home. So what are you here for?”

“I just thought that I might run into you here~”

“I have no reaction except that you creep me out.”

“…I’m just half joking. Apparently there aren’t enough people for overnight duty, so I’m here to help out.”

“At the News Department?”

“Yup. One of my contemporaries came crying at me. He was supposed to take the shift at the newsdesk tonight.”

“If he’s a contemporary of yours, doesn’t he know how expensive it is to ask you for a favor so carelessly?”

“Apparently he needed to make a sacrifice somewhere. Anyway, I don’t have any plans for New Year’s, and I’m basically on phone duty. I should be free some time after noon tomorrow, so let’s head out together.”

“Why?”

“I’ll give you a ride.”

“I don’t live that far away.”

“Okay, then how about we go for a drive?”

“I’m going home and sleeping.”

“Sounds nice~ I’ll accompany you~”

“I want to sleep as soon as I get home.”

“Well, of course. Let’s play and get familiar with things there too.”

“It takes too long.”

“It’s not that long. I mean, this year went by in the blink of an eye. It went by so fast it almost feels like a waste. Sakae, let’s have an even better year next year.”

“You’re really a man who never gets tired of things.”

To know what enough is—that is something we both don’t understand.”

“Make it a topic for your New Year’s calligraphy.”

“It’ll only make you sleep later. Are you sure about that?”

“Why are you assuming that we’re doing it at my place?”

  1. Shin just can’t catch a break among this group of personalities, lololol.

Ushio really is a shameless monster of a flirt. Tatsuki is too right in his assessment—it’s how he was able to capture the legendary river monster. 🤣🤣🤣

Also Shin should be very scared of what Tatsuki might buy at Donki. Maybe a reprise of the bunny ears, lol. At home.

How do Sakae and Shitara get any work done, when they keep flirting like this? lolol

  2. The return of the legendary river monster and kitarou.. lol gotta say hands down to Ushio, a great fisherman nonetheless hahaha HE FISHES EVERYONE WITH KEWLNESS hahahaha eiiii nobody can escape the hooks of this said fisherman, even kitarou and his sun can’t escape xD … Lol true.. too much flirting in the new editing room.. they’re basically baptizing it with their love lol xD

Thank you so much for the chapter!!!~ 🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇🙇

    1. Ushio with his hooks, man! Leaving a trail of victims with heart palpitations in his wake, lololol. No wonder Kei gets jealous so easily. xDD

I just love all these dumb flirts. xDDD

  3. thank you for the chapter!

I had a thought when reading this chapter. I think it’s really interesting how we don’t need a character’s name in the middle of the talking, because they’re so unique you just /know/ who is talking.

    1. Japanese fans and reviewers are always praising Ichiho-sensei for her unique characters and how individual they sound, and how they always know who is talking even when it’s not specified. So your comment amazes me that you identified this exact characteristic of her writing even through my translations, and it makes me so happy to hear you say that! It is something that I work really hard at, something that I’m always worrying about in my translations, and I’m so glad that it came through for you! Thank you, Mizushi, you’re too lovely~
